ObjectivesThis Joint Honours course offers you the opportunity to study Russian or Serbian/Croatian language, literature and culture along with the theory and history of communications in a global context. You will devote about half of your time to each discipline, taking core modules in each subject, plus further optional modules, with increasing specialisation in the final year. You will take part in a special subsidised course in Russia or a Serbian/Croatian-speaking area in the first summer vacation.
Entry requirementsRequired subjects: B in Russian or good AS level IB score: 32 (5 in Russian, or in another modern foreign language for Serbian/Croatian or if beginner in Russian, both at higher level)

Programme
Year one
Beginners in Russian or Serbian/Croatian take introductory language modules up to approximately A level standard. Students who know Russian take more advanced language modules. You take further modules from a range of options in Russian or Serbian/Croatian culture, history, cinema and literature. In Communications Studies, the course introduces you to the key theories and ideas, developing knowledge and understanding of approaches to subjects such as visual culture and communication, cultural difference and globalisation.
Year two
Your language studies will be consolidated to prepare you for the year abroad and you will take further modules in Russian or Serbian/Croatian culture, history, cinema and literature. In Communications Studies you will study the political implications of theories and approaches to culture and communications, and explore the politics of particular situations, ranging from everyday-life encounters to questions of national identity.
Year three
Spent in Russia, studying at a university or language school, with further opportunities for travel and volunteer work.
Year four
In the last year you apply your languages in high-level modules, including employment-related ones. There is a wide range of specialised cultural and literary options. In Communications Studies you specialise in areas of your choice. Optional modules will explore topics such as political correctness, hate speech and representations of disaster.
