Objectives
Philosophical reflection requires a distinctive combination of imagination and exact reasoning, and you may have this combination whether you have been studying arts or science subjects. Philosophy at Sheffield is highly flexible: apart from two short overview modules in the first year, designed to orientate you in the subject, the rest of the degree is open, and you can choose the modules that fit your interests. At level one you can select from full and half modules both in philosophy and in other subjects, where single honours students are advised to take the equivalent of four full modules in philosophy. At level two you will take six modules, and a further six at level three. You can introduce discussions at course seminars and each academic year we organise a staff-student reading weekend. The Student Philosophical Society organises discussions and a variety of lively social events. Students are also welcome at the Departmental Research Seminar, when visiting philosophers discuss issues at the forefront of current research.
