Objectives
Music is an exciting subject to study at York St John University. Our degree provides a relevant, contemporary and challenging programme which crosses musical boundaries, giving students the skills which are essential for today's musician. Music teaching is led by practice, whether in performance, composing or listening, and students gain considerable insight from this 'hands-on' approach to learning. We study music from a wide range of styles and genres including classical, jazz, rock, pop and world musics and have developed extensive music technology and recording facilities which students can integrate into creative work.

Entry requirements
Entry requirements You will need three GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), including English Language, plus one of the following: * 160 points (including a minimum of two A2 Levels or a 12 unit AVCE or a combination) or * 160 points from BTEC National Diploma/Certificate or * Equivalent Scottish, Irish, Welsh or overseas qualifications or * An equivalent qualification to those listed above (eg Access to Higher Education Certificate, International Baccalaureate)

BA Performance: Music
Modules include
Level 1
* Music Foundation: understand key works of the 20th century by composers such as Stravinsky and The Beatles through listening, performing and composing.
* Vox: develop vocal skills and explore a range of musical styles and techniques from Buddhist chanting to cabaret, enhance aural skills and gain confidence in performing.
* Music Text: develop deeper insight of 20th century music through analysis, arranging and performance.
* Music Devised: techniques of composing, improvising and working with music technology.
Level 2
* World Music: an exploration of key musical cultures to discover how other people use and value music differently, and to learn about ourselves in the process!
* Music in the Community: the opportunity to work on music projects alongside a range of community-based groups. This module includes a placement and offers the opportunity to learn how to present effective music workshops.
* Popular Music: study the development of popular music and youth culture and the role it plays in society today.
* Ensemble Performance: play in a band, sing in a choir or form your own group. This module enables you to further your development as a performer in an ensemble context to include a range of performance opportunities.
* Plus options to specialise in either Solo Performance or Composition.
Level 3
* Contemporary Music: explore a cross-section of the music of today through performance and analysis.
* Music, Musicians, Audience: instigate and investigate research projects which explore the relationships between the creators, performers and consumers of music. Share the results of your project and discuss the implications within the broader context of the psychology, sociology and cultural implications of music in society.
* Experimental Performance: this is an innovative and exciting module which draws upon your creative skills, musical understanding and technical control to create collaborative performances in music.
* Ensemble Performance: develop ensemble skills to include aspects of musical leadership or administration, form and direct an ensemble and present a concert. This module offers the opportunity to be fully involved in all aspects of organising, marketing and producing a successful concert performance.
* Plus options to specialise in either Solo Performance or Composition.
