BA Music Education

  • Objectives This is a professional course within the Secondary Initial Teacher Education scheme. The course leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status for Key Stages 3 and 4 (11 16). Some training in post-16 teaching is also covered on the course. All courses in the Secondary Initial Teacher Education Scheme have a special interest in preparation for teaching in urban, multilingual contexts. Reflection on teaching practice is ongoing throughout the course and you record evidence of all your experiences in relation to the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Entry requirements Applicants should have studied music to a level equivalent to the first year of a degree. Relevant professional experience may be accredited as equivalent to the study of music to first-year degree level. A commitment to teaching music in a secondary school is an essential requirement. All entrants are interviewed, which includes a selection test of performance, aural ability, musical understanding and a test of written English. In addition, entrants need to have GCSE at grade C or above (or an equivalent qualification) in English and Mathematics. Equivalent internal tests can be taken by those who do not have these qualifications.
