BA Music and Philosophy

Objectives
Taking Music and Philosophy allows you to develop your ability in and understanding of music in combination with learning about philosophical issues that have challenged thinkers for centuries. On this degree course you will normally take half of your modules in Music and half in Philosophy. A Dual Honours Music BA course gives you the opportunity to explore a variety of musical disciplines. An extensive range of modules in level one allows students to define their own modular programme through levels two and three. Students may wish to specialise at level three in composition, dissertation or performance. Music: In the Music Department a personal tutor will work with you over three years to help you make the most of your studies and encourage you to excel. Lectures, seminars and group tutorials are reinforced by individual supervision or feedback. The Music part of your degree is assessed through projects, performances and coursework, giving you a chance to develop your own skills and interests in an independent and creative manner. The Performance module at level one is assessed by a short recital. The level three Instrumental or Vocal Recital is given in public. While following a recital track you are given tuition on your principal instrument. Philosophy: The Philosophy Department offers an exciting range of courses taught by researchers who are experts in their fields. You can develop your understanding of the key areas of philosophy such as ethics, philosophy of mind, theory of knowledge, political philosophy, metaphysics and logic through the course of your three years. We also have courses on major figures in the history of philosophy such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel and others. The Philosophy side of the degree is highly flexible, with no required modules.
