BA Modern History

  • Objectives The course offers an integrated approach to the study of modern history, covering the fields of economic, social, political and cultural history. Particular attention is paid to the development of evaluative, analytical and research skills through studies of modern British, European and American history.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Three A levels (A2) at grades BCC or two A levels (A2) at grades BB; plus English GCSE grade C or above; other Curriculum 2000 combinations will be considered on an individual basis.

    Programme

    Credit Level 4

    There is much flexibility and choice to enable you to experience a number of social science perspectives. The core module Studying in Higher Education ensures that you possess and develop the key study and transferable skills needed to complete your studies successfully. It focuses on skills relating to studying, library and information retrieval, information technology, team and groupwork, presentation and communication.

    You take three subject specific core modules from: 19th Century London 1815-1914; Blood and Iron; Britain in Decline; Nations and Freedom; Pax Britannica; The Industrial Revolution

    Option modules provide an opportunity to experience perspectives from outside your chosen programme, allowing you to change course at the end of Credit Level 4 where appropriate. One of these option modules is designated as a free choice module which can be taken from anywhere across the University.

    Core modules: Dissertation; Europe in the Short 20th Century; Historiography and Research Methods; Modern America; Modern Britain: the Age of Democracy
