ObjectivesThe course aims to: -provide a supportive environment for all students, free of bias or discrimination; -stimulate and extend students' critical appreciation of the medieval era; provide a challenging and coherent curriculum, based on the study of the history, literature, language and art of the medieval period; -develop appreciation of a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to particular historical, literary and aesthetic issues of the medieval period; -offer specific training in a choice of languages and in palaeography; encourage students to think and work across the conventional lines between disciplines; -extend students' powers of critical analysis and logical argument by applying them to historical and literary interpretation; develop students' capacity to communicate and present ideas orally and in writing; -advance the ability of students to work independently and organise their schedules of personal study; -produce graduates with the transferable skills of self-management, independence, capacity to analyse and ability to undertake research, essential for employment, for postgraduate study in history, language, literature or history of art, and for further training.
Entry requirementsSelected entry requirements English language: Minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or equivalent; eg. NCUK EAP minimum Grade of A with range of 70-79 TOEFL: PBT score of 600; CBT score of 250; TWE score of 5.5; IBT score of 100. A level: Grades ABB-BBB. General Studies is welcomed but not included as part of the standard offer. Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications. Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes. GCSE: Minimum of grade C in English Language and Mathematics; minimum grade C in a modern language. Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University. Course descriptionCourse description
The programme embraces the study of medieval European civilization from around AD400 to 1500 in its artistic, historical, linguistic and literary aspects. Medieval specialists from a wide range of departments within the university co-operate to provide a choice of courses which cover a wide chronological and geographical range and which adopt a variety of different approaches to the life of the middle ages. The year 3 independent dissertation is a highpoint.

Graduates find work in many different fields, some still involved with Medieval Studies, others in less specialised graduate careers for which an honours degree, rather than a specific subject, is desired. Employers value graduates for their breadth, ability to analyse, literacy and communication skills.
