Programme
Year One
In the first semester all students will be introduced to some of the major theoretical approaches to the media, and to the structures of the media industries. In the second semester we offer specialist introductions to the theories of news media, broadcasting and public relations. You study the one appropriate to your pathway and can choose others as options. The Journalism and Public Relations pathways start with a six week general introduction to journalism. Journalism students study a range of essential skills for all forms of journalism, such as interviewing, news writing, and research. Public relations students couple this with an introduction to public relations practice.
Year Two
All students make four choices from a menu of six theory modules. These currently cover topics such as globalisation, media consumption, technology news and public opinion. Journalism students deepen their skills in news and feature writing and production journalism, and extend them from print to online and broadcast journalism. Public relations students couple this with modules on how to construct a PR campaign and corporate communications. Students are encouraged to find a work-placement in the media in their second year.
Year Three
In the final year you will produce a major project in your chosen pathway, involving both team and individual work. In journalism, students produce a magazine, website, or broadcast, plus a commissioned feature, while in PR you will design a PR campaign.
