BA International Communications Studies

  • Objectives Studying the theory and history of communications in a global context, you will develop a strong sense of the various political, economic, social and cultural factors which shape the way we understand, or misunderstand, each other on an international stage. In addition, you will have the opportunity to study a European or Asian language fom beginners to A level standard, or continue with a language you already know (French, German, Spanish), and to acquire practical knowledge of the operation of journalism and the news media. There is an opportunity to spend part of year two abroad.

    Programme

    Year one

    Through core modules, you will be introduced to the key theories and ideas of communications and cultural studies, developing knowledge and understanding of approaches to subjects such as visual cultures and communication, cultural difference and globalisation. You may study your chosen language and will also have opportunities to study modules from other Departments to suit your interests.

    Year two

    Consolidating the work of the previous year, you will study the political implications of theories and approaches to culture and communications. Optional modules will explore the politics of particular situations, events and contexts, ranging from everyday life encounters to questions of national identity. You may continue with your chosen language and there will be opportunities to spend part of the year studying abroad.

    Year three

    Your final year allows you to specialise and to approach your studies with a further degree of independence through researching and writing a dissertation. Optional modules will explore topics reflecting the specialisms of the academic staff teaching you and will offer the opportunity for more practical work. In addition, you may extend your command of your particular language.
