BA History with Contemporary Chinese Studies

  • Objectives You will combine a broadly-based history degree with an in-depth study of contemporary China, normally devoting three-quarters of your time to history with the rest in Chinese studies. In history, you will develop the skills for writing and debating history, and undertake an independent analysis of a historiography subject of your choice. In Chinese studies, you have the option to learn Mandarin to degree level and to undertake an intensive three-week field course in China.

    Programme

    Year one

    The History core is Learning History,The History core is Learning History, a skill and methodology based module. The emphasis is on reflecting on the nature of history as a discipline and to develop the skills required for the writing and debating of history. You also take further survey modules in European history and two compulsory Chinese Studies modules. You are encouraged to take their optional modules in Mandarin.

    Year two

    The History core module Exploring Historiography and is intended to develop independence of mind and critical abilities, which involves planning, researching and writing a 5,000-word analysis of the historiography of a topic of your choice. You also take three optional modules in Chinese Studies and History. The Chinese Studies options include a three-week field trip in China.

    Year three

    The dissertation (10,000 words) is compulsory and normally China-related, plus a mix of History Special Subject and Chinese Studies modules. As in year two, the Chinese Studies options available include modules on aspects of China's contemporary society, economy, politics, environment, culture and media.
