Objectives
This course enables you to develop your language skills to a high level and to choose from a wide range of modules in German and Austrian literature, culture and the media, history, politics, society, and linguistics. In the course of the degree, you may narrow your focus or pursue a broad range of subjects according to your interests. There is also the opportunity to learn other languages.

Programme
Year one
The first year core language course develops the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. In addition, you take modules in Literature, History, Politics and Society, and may opt for modules in linguistics. You also take modules outside the German Department (in another language or a non-language subject).
Year two
In addition to core language modules, you take modules in Literature, Culture, History, Politics and Society, and may opt for modules in linguistics. Dutch is also normally available. Second year single honours students continue to take modules outside the German Department (in another language or in a non-language subject).
Year three
Spent abroad, studying at an exchange university, working as an English language assistant, or working for a German or Austrian company.
Year four
You will develop your command of German to a high level and use it in increasingly sophisticated contexts. You will also have a wide choice of modules in all the areas mentioned above. You may choose to write a dissertation.
