BA Fine Art and Art History

  • Objectives Do you see yourself as an artist, and as someone who would enjoy writing about and analysing art of all kinds? As the barriers between these areas of the art world crumble, we believe there has never been a more exciting time to train in the practice and history of art together.
  • Entry requirements Art and Design Foundation, BTEC, National Diploma or equivalent accepted. Normally applicants attend an interview and present their portfolio. Alternatively, A level/AS level/Vocational A level: normally 220-300 points plus portfolio. International Baccalaureate: 26 points (including three subjects at higher level and English Language at A2).

    Programme

    Year 1

        * In the studio, different Fine Art practices are introduced
        * In Art History, modules are offered about contemporary writings on art and changing themes used by artists
        * A chance to study the growth of museums and galleries worldwide, using outstanding local examples like Tate St Ives

        * You will be introduced to contemporary writings on art; art and its audiences; and/or late 19th-century art

    Year 2

        * Introduction to negotiated study allows more freedom in studio and site-based work
        * Art History options include modern art in Europe and America, Viennese art, the movements of Romanticism and Expressionism, the Italian Renaissance, the arts of Africa, native North America and the Pacific
        * Delve deeper into the latest art theory

    Year 3

        * Produce a body of art that speaks to the themes you choose for the Art History dissertation
        * History and theory options include a module on current thinking in museums, using the shows running at the time and input from the curators
        * Training in the presentation of studio work for discussion to peers, tutors and examiners
