BA Film and Literature

  • Objectives The degree aims to define and explore the creative potentialities of film and to a lesser extent television, closely examining textual features, assessing critically the achievements of major practitioners, the history of key genres and the various theories of film that have been elaborated. There is consideration of the historical, sociological and ideological aspects of cinema, relating films to the particular cultures and periods in which they were produced, and exploring the significance of genres and stars and the role of technology and economics.
  • Entry requirements General university admissions requirements All applicants must possess a minimum level of competence in English Language and in Mathematics or a Science. A pass at Grade C or above in GCSE English Language and in Mathematics or a Science, or an equivalent qualification, fulfils this requirement. For some courses, requirements are above this University minimum, so you should check the relevant course-specific entry requirements in our hard copy prospectus which you can order online or browse on our online directory. We usually ask for candidates to show a broad base of study at GCSE level (or equivalent) with passes in at least five subjects from a range of disciplines.

    Programme

    Year One

    -Film Studies: Basic Issues and Methods (double-weighted): Film History strand and Film Criticism strand.
    -Modes of Reading.
    -Aspects of Modern French and German Literature.

    Year Two

    -The Hollywood Cinema.
    -Aspects of National Cinemas.
    -Naturalism or US Writing and Culture 1780-1920.

    Year Three

    -Film Aesthetics.
    -Film or Literature (chosen from those available).
    -Culture, the Text and Identity.
    -Film or Literature (may include Hollywood Cinema II; National Cinemas II; Music and Film); or an approved Option from another department. Students may also write a dissertation in their final year.
