  • Objectives * English offers an exciting, challenging combination of traditional and non-traditional modules, currently ranging from Chaucer and Shakespeare to creative writing and contemporary women’s fiction * English at DMU received a top-ranking score 5(a) for internationally recognised research in the last assessment of all UK universities * Research strengths drive teaching in Shakespeare and the Renaissance, literary adaptations, women’s writing, modernism and electronic scholarship * Work placements help bridge the gap between university and employment * Students are offered the opportunity to meet with contemporary writers such as Matthew Sweeney, Jackie Kay, Ruth Fainlight, Terry Jones, Alan Sillitoe, Patience Agbabi and Andrew Davies.

    Programme

    The first year examines the genres of drama, the novel and poetry as well as creative and practical writing and literature on screen.

    Second year modules introduce students to literature from the medieval period to the present day, while offering students the opportunity to pursue study in areas ranging from Medieval Romance to Writing in the 21st Century.

    In the third year, a wider range of specialist modules are available, such as Studies in Literature and Film, Contemporary Poetry and 20th Century Autobiography and English in the Workplace. Students in recent years have completed dissertation projects on topics ranging from William Blake and popular music to literary representations of the Holocaust. We have an open door academic guidance centre available for students across all years.
