BA English Studies

  • Objectives English Studies at Nottingham is one of the widest ranging degree courses in the country. It aims to introduce students to the range of disciplines within English, including literature, language, medieval studies and drama.

    Programme

    Year one

    You are introduced to the range of disciplines within English, including English literature from its origins to the present day, modern English language, medieval studies (including Old and Middle English) and drama, through core modules. You can also try a range of subsidiary modules offered by other Departments.

    Year two

    Core modules develop the four areas of English literature, language, medieval studies and drama. Second year study develops this introduction to include a module on literary theory.

    Year three

    You may choose from a wide range of specialist modules. Module options offered in the past have included single-author studies, genre studies and period studies in literature, topics in language such as sociolinguistics or English language teaching and work on performance and theatre, all giving you the chance to study in smaller groups with an expert in the field. You also have the opportunity of writing a dissertation on a subject of your choice.
