Programme
Year one
You gain familiarity with the practices of working at degree level and are introduced to language and modern literature in core English modules and may be able to choose a module introducing either medieval studies or drama. The German core language course develops the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. In addition, you take modules in literature, history, politics and society, and may opt for modules in linguistics.
Year two
You take a core module in literary theory, and choose further modules in English language, modern literary culture, medieval studies and/or performance analysis. Your German language studies will be consolidated to prepare for the year abroad. You also take modules in literature, history, politics and society. There is additionally a wide choice of modules in German culture and media and Dutch is normally available.
Year three
Spent abroad in Germany or Austria, either as an English language assistant in a school, working for a private company, or studying at one of our partner universities.
Year four
You choose from a wide range of modules enabling you to specialise in key areas of English Studies. Joint honours students enjoy the same wide range of final year options in English Studies as single honours. In German, you will develop your command of German to a high level and use it in increasingly sophisticated contexts. You will also study optional modules drawn from the areas of literature, history, politics, society, media and linguistics.
