Objectives
This degree introduces the development of British poetry, drama and prose from the medieval period to the 20th century within the context of a wideranging examination of their place in the history and contemporary practice of literature. You will study writers ranging from Chaucer to Jeanette Winterson, from Jane Austen to Derek Walcott. There is a particular focus on the Renaissance and on the complex relationship between literature and historical and social change in the 17th and 19th centuries. In the Third Year you will consider the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries as products of their culture and as plays for the modern stage. You will also take a module in either modern or eighteenth-century literature
