BA English Literature and Linguistics

  • Objectives This degree is theoretical and challenging, allowing emphasis on the contemporary within an interdisciplinary approach. Depending on whether the course is taken as a Joint Honours or a Major/Minor combination, the balance of the two subject areas varies. There is also the opportunity to take two modules in language teaching. At Credit Level 6 you can complete a dissertation in English Literature or Linguistics.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Three A levels (A2) at grades BCC including C in English Language or English Literature or two A levels (A2) at grades BB including English Language or English Literature; other Curriculum 2000 combinations will be considered on an individual basis. Non-native speakers of English must have IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. International Baccalaureate candidates are welcomed.

    Linguistics modules

    Credit Levels 4 and 5

    Modules include: Introduction to Linguistics, Phonetics (articulatory and auditory), Phonology (sound systems and the theory of sound systems), Semantics (meaning of words and sentences and theory of meaning) and Syntax (grammatical knowledge and theory of grammar), Psycholinguistics, Pragmatics and Literary Linguistics.
