BA English Literature and European Literature and Culture
ObjectivesAlongside the study of the texts themselves, we aim to give you an introduction to the intellectual and historical context within which the works were produced, and to develop your understanding of the comparative importance of national and European creative developments. In all three years of your degree, you will explore tha interrealtion between literatures and cultures of different European countries, and so gain new, comparative perspectives on English literature, culture and history. More generally, the programme also aims to foster an independent approach to formulating problems and arguments, using the close reading and analytical skills that are fundamental to the discipline.
Entry requirementsThere are different entry qualifications for each programme. Some programmes require you to have a certain amount of knowledge in a subject before you begin the degree programme – this is called a ‘subject requirement’. Other programmes do not have any specific subject requirements. All programmes will, however, expect you to have reached a certain standard in your education and will ask you to achieve certain grades in your examinations. Most programmes have a standard offer so that you know in advance what you are likely to need. Please note that even if you have the minimum entry qualifications, you are not necessarily guaranteed a place on the degree programme.
