BA English Language and Politics

  • Objectives The University of Westminster offers a number of Combined Honours degrees that are taught across two departments, English and Linguistics and Social and Political Studies. You will be joining a large and diverse group of students studying in the centre of London at the University’s historic site in Regent Street. These programmes offer the opportunity to combine subjects that complement each other and add to the range of intellectual and personal transferable skills that you can acquire in university study. As well as providing a thorough grounding in the subjects that you choose you will also be able to choose from a wide selection of options that will allow you to shape your course according to your own interests. You will develop your independent study and research capabilities and most of the programmes also offer work-based modules that will enhance your employability.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Those students studying for 3 A levels are required to gain BCC. Students studying for 2 A levels are required to gain BB. International Baccalaureate 30 points Access to HE 54 credits at level 3 Or any other European or international qualification that is equivalent.

    Programme

    This area offers detailed study of the history and development of the uses of the English Language. It is not intended as a course for students wishing to improve their spoken English, but for students whose first language is English or whose knowledge of the language is already good. There is an introductory module which studies aspects of English such as style and register, grammer and reading techniques and practices advanced study skills. More specialised modules include the history of English, the study of national, regional and multicultural varieties of English and creative writing. Students are also able to select modules inlinguistics and literature as part of the range of options
    The Politics curriculum includes political theory, political analysis, comparative and historical analysis plus appropriate research methods and methodologies. Introductory modules examine contemporary problems, concepts, issues and approaches to the study of politics. Second year modules extend and deepen this initial analysis with the study of British politics, political philosophy, and research methods and methodology. The final year modules build on the foundations of earlier modules and provide an opportunity for in-depth, specialised study of practical real-world politics, contemporary political theory and student-driven independent research. A range of special option modules allow students the opportunity to specialise in areas that suit their interests such as political institutions, European politics, security studies, 'third world' politics and diplomacy.
