ObjectivesLanguage is fundamentally important in human activity and interaction. It is the means by which all other subjects are studied, while at the same time a fascinating subject of study in its own right. In this course we take a ‘hands-on’ approach to learning about the English language in use.
Entry requirementsEntry Requirements: Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome.

Programme
1st year overview
Certificate level modules: Introduction to Language and English Grammar and Syntax are pre-requisites for further study on this course. We also run modules on Academic Writing, and introduce you to phonetics and phonology in English Language Sounds.
These modules provide a foundation in linguistics, and give training in systematic approaches to language. They are suitable even if you are new to the subject.
2nd year overview
You will start to specialise in different areas. Intermediate level modules include:
* Language and Mind – an introduction to psycholinguistics.
* Written Discourse Analysis – a detailed study of authentic written genres.
* Spoken Discourse Analysis – a range of perspectives on spoken interaction.
* Advanced Grammar – developing arguments in grammatical description.
* Variations in Modern English – regional variation and the ‘standard’.
