BA Education Studies

  • Objectives Through the study of education, in its many guises, we will ask questions and seek answers. Our first question might be 'What is education?' Think for a second about this. What comes into your head? What does it mean to be educated? What would an educated person look like? Or act like? What does it mean when we say that we have had a good education? The Education Studies programme will help you to discover the answers to these and other questions.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements You will need three GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), including English Language (Maths also needed for Business Management option), plus one of the following: * 160 points (including a minimum of two A2 Levels or a 12 unit AVCE or a combination) or * 160 points from BTEC National Diploma/Certificate or * Equivalent Scottish, Irish, Welsh or overseas qualifications or * An equivalent qualification to those listed above (eg Access to Higher Education Certificate, International Baccalaureate)

        * ICT & Academic Communication Skills in Education: key skills for Higher Education.
        * History of English Education: how has the English education system developed since 1870?
        * Current Issues in Education: what topical issues are there in the world of education?
        * How We Learn 1: how did early psychologists view learning?
        * Education & Fairness: is our education system fair for all learners?

    Level 2

        * Knowledge & the Curriculum: are there different ways of organising knowledge?
        * Research Design & Planning in Education: how to research in education.
        * Location of Education: where does learning take place?
        * How We Learn 2: what modern theories are there about learning?
        * Work-based Learning in Education: a chance to develop your work skills.
        * Comparative International Education: how is education approached in other countries?

    Level 3

        * Special Study: a chance to pursue an area of interest in depth.
        * The Comprehensive Experience, Inclusion & Beyond: what happened to the comprehensive Ideal?
        * Values Teaching: how do we teach values? What values do we teach? Why?
        * Investigating Learning: what claims are made about different ways of learning? What evidence is there?
        * Future Education: what will education be like in the future? Will schools still exist?
        * Education & Contemporary Ethical Issues: how does education approach ethical issues of immediate concern?
