BA Economics

  • Objectives The Department offers a range of degree programmes, all of which include a core component that provides students with a thorough grounding in the ideas, techniques and principles of modern economic analysis. The wide variety of core and optional modules that we offer reflect the diverse research interests of the 30 academic staff in the Department. We also offer a number of taught postgraduate MSc programmes as well as research degrees leading to a PhD.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements * A/AS Levels: Three A levels ABB or equivalent. Two AS levels considered in place of one A Level, General studies or an own language A level accepted. * GCSE: GCSE Mathematics at grade B is also required. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 70% overall * International Baccalaureate: Pass Full Diploma with 32 points overall. * Leicestershire Progression Accord: BBB from 6 unit awards or equivalent plus full Accord Credits. * Cypriot Apolytirion: 18.5/20 overall including 17 in Maths plus an appropriate English language qualification. * Singapore Diplomas from Polytechnics: Pass with average grade B plus an appropriate English language qualification. * Malaysian STPM: ABB plus an appropriate English language qualification. * Chinese first year degree course: Normally pass with an average of 80% plus an appropriate English language qualification. * Other qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed. Mature students welcomed: alternative qualifications considered. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications strictly comparable with our degree structure. * Applicants are not normally interviewed. All those receiving an offer will be invited to visit the Department. * These degrees are not available on a part-time basis.

    Programme

    First Year

    You will be introduced to studying the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and the economic application of basic mathematical and statistical techniques to the solution of economic problems. In addition you will be trained in the use of appropriate information technology.

    Second Year

    You will develop your knowledge and understanding of microeconomics, macroeconomics and apply further statistical techniques to the analysis of economic data. In addition, you may choose from a range of Economics, Business Economics and Financial Economics options, including the economics analysis of human resources, legal issues and social problems.

    Third Year

    You will develop specialist knowledge in advanced microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and undertake in-depth research in an area of economics during your dissertation. In addition you may choose from a wide range of advanced topics in economic theory, its applications to business and financial decision-making and the economic analysis of government and international policy.
