BA Drawing and Applied Arts

  • Objectives This studio-based course focuses on drawing as both a discipline and as a means of developing practice in the applied arts. It has been specifically designed to recognise and assist students who wish to explore their creativity through an experience of drawing and making. The dynamic and creative opportunities offered by this approach make the course unique.
  • Entry requirements Applicants from the following routes will be considered: students with A-levels, students with BTEC/GNVQ Media, students from Foundation and Access courses. Applicants demonstrating commitment to and knowledge of the subject on their application form are invited to interview where they may be required to present a collection of their creative work. Applications should be made through UCAS Route A or Route B but it should be noted that it may not be possible to interview every applicant.

  • Course description Content

    Year 1

The first year introduces you to a range of concepts and applications related to the practice of drawing. You will be encouraged to understand how and why you draw as well as giving you the opportunity to explore the way in which drawing may be developed through a range of different media, processes and ideas. You will also be introduced to aspects of applied arts practices in printmaking, ceramics, enamelling or embroidery.

    Year 2

You will develop your creative practice through engagement with a range of different ideas, applications and contexts. Option modules in the second semester allow you to make choices about possible areas of study so that you are able to determine your own particular range of specialist interests, skills and ambitions within the remit of drawing and applied arts. You will be encouraged to learn new skills and consider the interdisciplinary potential of your practice. Professional practice components are introduced at this level, and you are encouraged to undertake work placements and become involved in live projects. Throughout the year you are encouraged to adopt an increasingly professional and individual approach to the presentation and organisation of your work. There is also a work experience module and the chance to take part in an exchange with European students through the Socrates-Erasmus programme.

    Year 3

Your final year consists of a self-directed programme of study that should reflect your own particular skills, abilities and ambitions. This will be supported by and negotiated with the staff team. It should give you the opportunity to identify specific ideas, contexts and approaches to your work. You will be expected to combine your creative practice with a high level of critical reflection and research culminating in the presentation of a substantial body of work and a written dissertation.
