    Programme

This is a course in contemporary dance. Students are offered a breadth of study with opportunities to pursue specific interests such as choreography. In Year 1, students are offered a firm foundation in dance practice, choreography, understanding dance and the Alexander Technique. In Years 2 and 3, students are encouraged to develop personal subject interests by choosing modules according to artistic interest or career aspirations. Optional modules include, for example, Dance Artists in Education and the Community, Dance as History and Teaching and Leading Dance. Students also undertake a Dance Research Project in year 3.

Classes in contemporary dance include partner work, contact/improvisation, repertory and performance. Choreography emphasises current approaches to performance making. Students are encouraged to re-think conventional choreographic methods in making video dance and live performance.

The University Dance Festival offers final year students opportunities to make, perform and present their own work to a wider audience.

Throughout the course students will also study the Alexander Technique for performance. They also engage with critical perspectives to locate their own practice in relation to current theory and professional developments in, for example, performance, community dance and education.

DMU does not charge studio fees.
