ObjectivesCriminology is concerned with the systematic empirical study of crime, disorder and crime reduction. Criminological enquiry includes the exploration of popular conceptions of crime in the media. It is concerned with the explanation of criminal action ranging from petty theft to state sponsored terrorism. It also includes the critical consideration of crime reduction including the activities of the police, Crown Prosecution Service, courts, prisons and community safety or crime prevention. Politics offers a critical understanding of political processes and institutions at national and international level. It also analyses the ideas and philosophies behind contemporary social and political debates.
