  • Objectives At a time when Tate Modern attracts four million visitors a year, studying art has never seemed so important. If you want to delve into elements of history, sociology, philosophy and psychology to grasp what art is saying, want small group teaching by leading experts in the field and a course built on lively discussion of the latest thinking in the discipline, Art History is the subject for you.
  • Entry requirements 220-300 points. A level/AS level or equivalent. Equivalent non-A level qualifications also considered. Exceptional ability will be considered regardless of qualifications.

    Programme

    Art History Year 1

        * An introduction to art history as an academic discipline
        * Study the growth of museums and galleries worldwide, using outstanding local examples like Tate St Ives
        * Explore late 19th-century painting (Impressionism and Post-Impressionism)

    Art History Year 2

        * Options currently include modern art in Europe and America, Viennese art, the movements of Romanticism and Expressionism, the Italian Renaissance, the arts of Africa, native North America and the Pacific
        * Explore the latest art theory, eg art and gender
        * Subsidised European field trip: previous years include Rome and Vienna

    Art History Year 3

        * Choice of dissertation topic (past examples range from skateboard visual culture in New York to Raphael's changing reputation in the last 100 years)
        * History and theory options (include current thinking in museums)
        * Training in the latest technologies used in art research and guidance on your career (personal development planning)
