Course descriptionCourse description
The BA (Hons) Accounting, Management and Information Systems programme provides the opportunity to study key Information Systems issues in conjunction with Accounting. Throughout the programme students will be able to complement their studies with courses from the other pathway (i.e. Management for Accounting specialists and vice versa).
Special features
This programme enables students to develop knowledge and key skills in complementary discipline areas that are highly sought after by employers - accounting, management and information systems. Increasingly, accountants and managers are required to be adept at managing complex IS projects and contributing to the development of new systems; this course is designed to give students in-depth experience in both the academic theory of these issues and their practical application in real life through case studies and a compulsory IS project.
Module details
You take courses totalling 360 credits over the duration of your studies in order to graduate with Honours; 120 credits in each year of study. Generally, one semester courses are worth 10 credits and full year courses are worth 20 credits. As your studies progress you have increasing flexibility in choosing courses which suit your personal interests and career aspirations.
Course content for year 1
The first year of the BA Accounting, Management and Information Systems includes compulsory courses in information systems, accounting and management. All first year courses are ten unit one semester courses to ensure that students are exposed to a broad foundation in each of the three discipline areas. By the end of the first year students should have developed the basic knowledge, skills and personal development required to enable them to undertake more specialised units that can be selected in the 2nd and 3rd years of the programme
Course content for year 2
In the second year BA (Hons) Accounting, Management and Information Systems students take one 20 unit course in information systems development and organizational change plus another 40 Information Systems credits from options such as application development, web development and access databases. These courses give students the opportunity to learn about the application of information systems within a management context and to focus on key Information Systems technologies in modern organizations. In addition 40 compulsory credits in accounting and 20 optional credits which may be taken in either accounting and/or management.
Course content for year 3
By the final year students are ready to apply the higher level cognitive skills and knowledge gained in the preceding years to a 30 credit Information Systems project. The project is compulsory but is sufficiently flexible to enable students to focus not only on their chosen specialism but also on particular Information Systems issues studied in the second year and built upon in the final year.
A particular feature of the final year is the exciting and extensive range of ten credit Information Systems courses, from which students must select a minimum of 30 credits. Accounting specialists continue to enhance their knowledge in this area through a further 40 credits in accounting. With 20 optional credits these students can either broaden their learning by taking management courses or continue to develop their knowledge in accounting or even take additional Information Systems courses.
