Art History – An Introduction - Course

  • Course description

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance” – Aristotle

This informal course, open to all-comers, will guide you in the ways of achieving more knowledge and understanding of artworks through the study of the various concepts, contexts and styles that combine, along with other influences and inspirations, in the creation of a work of art.

Our studies will take us through different periods and techniques whilst we discover and evaluate the social, political and cultural changes that occurred throughout each period and the impact that these had on the artists of the time and their art.

In the Autumn Term of 2016 we will be making an in-depth study of the works of the Impressionists, looking at many French, British and American artists. We will find answers to some fundamental questions, such as when, where and why the style of Impressionism came about. We will also come to appreciate just what a huge shock wave these artists created throughout the art world when they first produced their innovative paintings.

In the Spring Term of 2017 we will be making a comprehensive exploration of the works and life of Cézanne, an artist who took a significant change in direction from Impressionism and who was instrumental in changing the way artists looked at form, colour, light and line. Cézanne’s unique and inspirational painting formed a bridge between the art of the late 19th Century and the ‘modern’ art of the 20th Century, and was considered by many artists, such as Matisse and Picasso as ‘The father of us all.’

We will question, analyse and debate many fascinating artworks in a relaxed and enjoyable setting, making full use of the Art University Bournemouth’s extensive library for our research.

This course will form a basis, not only for your own research and pleasure, but also into future Art History courses when we will delve further into the wonderful world of art, which reflects and documents so much of our history and life
