Improve your understanding of the ways that architects and designers use models.
You may have already completed our Modelmaking – An Introduction course, or have experience of architectural or industrial design.
This new, fast paced intermediate course will encourage your understanding of the way that architects and designers use models.
You will explore the work of professional modelmakers before producing accurate models yourself, using professional techniques, with guidance and direction given by specialist tutor Will Strange, who is an experienced professional modelmaker and Senior Lecturer (BA Modelmaking) at Arts University Bournemouth.
Laser cutting and CAD / CAM techniques will be discussed and explored as part of this course, where you will gain experience of using plastics, card, rigid foams, carving, shaping and finishing techniques.
Simple architectural and product development modelmaking will be explored before you are challenged to model one of your own designs or a classic piece of architecture / design.
Your finished results will be valuable as an addition to your portfolio, for students looking to study higher-level courses, or the perfect foundation for further courses related to architecture and design.
Throughout the course you will be shown examples of professional practice, be introduced to recommended books about modelmaking and gain insight into an inspiring, creative and sometimes overlooked career option.
Entry requirements:Ideally you will have completed the ‘Introduction to Modelmaking’ course, or have experience of architectural or industrial design.
Previous experience of CAD software is not necessary but familiarity with reading (and perhaps creating) technical drawings will be valuable.
What you need to bring:Basic modelmaking tools; scalpel, steel ruler, try square etc. will be needed from the beginning. Later, individual, projects may need more specialist tools. You should be prepared to source these once the subject of your model is decided.
