Arab World Studies MA

  • Objectives -develop student's interest in and knowledge of the historical and contemporary Arab World from a range of disciplinary perspectives. -provide a thorough grounding in modern critical theoretical approaches to Arab World Studies, Middle Eastern Politics and Area Studies. -provide a basic grounding in modern critical theoretical approaches to Arab World Studies, Middle Eastern Politics and Area Studies. -provide a programme of study that introduces students to the study of the literature, history, politics and culture of Arabic-speaking countries, and familiarises them with key primary texts either in the original language or in translation. -provide graduates without any Arabic language competence the opportunity to learn Arabic language ab initio and experience Arab culture through a period of immersion in the Arab World. -make students fully conversant with the methods of scholarly research in a humanities discipline and the resources necessary for such research.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: The normal requirement for admission to the MA is an upper second class Honours degree or higher in a relevant subject, or its overseas equivalent. Applicants may be interviewed, especially if the first degree qualification is not in a clearly related subject. The fact of being a native speaker of a Middle Eastern language is not regarded as a sufficient qualification for entry to the programme. Students who apply from overseas with non-UK qualifications should send a copy of their degree results with an officially authorised translation of their results, and an indication of the marking scale relating to their degree.

  • Course description Course description

    This unique and innovative course is offered by the newly-established Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), involving the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham. A full time, two-year course, it will include intensive Arabic language learning, partly taking place at the Arab Academy in Cairo, Egypt (from April until the end of August in the first year of the course), in addition to topics such as modern Islamic text, modern Arabic literature, the Arab cultural renaissance, the politics of gender in the Arab world, contemporary Arab thought, Islamic religious texts and Islamic legal texts.

    Module details

    The MA will be a full time two year course consisting of 320 credits in total (240 of which will be at Master's level); 140 credits will be delivered by the University of Edinburgh in year 1, and 180 credits will be delivered by the University of Manchester in year 2.

    -Research Skills and Methods
    -Research Methods and Problems
    -Advanced Issues in the Study of the Arab Speaking World

    On return from placement, students will be required to undertake the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (Manchester) diagnostic test in Arabic as part of the course's compulsory Skills Audit/Training Needs Analysis
