ObjectivesCourse Aims The programme offers a broad introduction to many of the key concepts and theories which underpin language teaching. It develops your knowledge of language and language study, and also examines theories which might lie behind your teaching practices. Throughout the programme, you are encouraged to reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice in your own professional context. The programme will also help you to become aware of the personal, social, and political consequences of your work as an English language teacher in your home country. The programme aims to: * develop your knowledge and understanding of the English language; theories of second language learning/acquisition; and key principles which underpin language teaching methodology. * develop your ability to appraise, evaluate and synthesize theories and concepts in terms of their relevance to specific local contexts of English teaching. * provide you with an opportunity to reflect upon and assess the social and political contexts of English language teaching within processes of globalization. * equip you with the ability to engage in continuing practice-based research and/or to pursue further formal studies in applied linguistics. * develop your knowledge and understanding of research methodology and plan and undertake a Master's-level dissertation project.
Entry requirementsStandard Entry Applicants prior qualifications and relevant teaching experience will be considered for entry on to the programme. Each case will be considered on its individual merits.

Course descriptionCOURSE INFORMATION
The Division of English and Creative Writing offers an MA in Applied Linguistics for TESOL that can be studied part-time over 2 or 3 years.
This MA programme is designed for experienced teachers of English as a second or foreign language in the UK or internationally. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students who have a minimum of two years' full-time teaching experience.
The MA Applied Linguistics for TESOL draws upon an extensive range of staff expertise and also upon the professional experience which students bring to their studies.
The programme can also serve as an introduction to work at PhD level.
COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
Modules are assessed through a mix of written assignments, oral presentations and/or examinations. The Master's dissertation is assessed by a piece of written work of up to 15000 words.

There is also a constant demand in both the UK and overseas for graduates with high levels of language awareness and communication skills in language related professions such as the media, communication industries, publishing and editing.
