    This programme is designed to prepare students to carry out doctoral level research. To this end, it provides training in a wide range of research methods and show students how to develop a substantive research topic in a theoretically and methodologically informed way. Although primarily intended as preliminary to doctoral research, this programme is also available as a stand-alone MA degree.

    Module details

    All students attend the following core course units: Issues in Ethnographic Research I and II; Postgraduate Research Seminar; Independent Theoretical and Ethnographic Analysis I and II. Students have the option of taking a second semester Independent Theoretical and Ethnographic Analysis II or an optional advanced specialist course unit. Choices currently include: Gender and Post-socialism; Anthropology, Globalization and Development; Black Identity and Culture in Latin America; Out of China; Bodies and Embodiment; Anthropology of Organisations; Introduction to Visual Anthropology; Visual Culture and Media; and Screening Culture: Issues in Anthropology and Film. Additionally, students take six 5 -credit compulsory courses on qualitative and quantitative research methods. Although there must be an equal balance of qualitative and quantitative methods training, students choose from a variety of alternative course units. Computer training is available via an on-line course for those who require training in this area.
