  • Objectives -To provide a thorough understanding of the basic principles of analysis, including design of sampling programme, pre treatment, data handling and the instrumentation used in modern analysis. -To help you think critically and make informed choices between proposed analytical techniques, methods and instruments. -To enable you to interpret data. -To teach the principles of quality control and assurance. -To enable you to apply your knowledge to the practical solution of real analytical problems. -To provide familiarity with current analytical literature to enable you to review, select, read and critically discuss the papers most relevant to a particular topic. -To train you in the methods of experimental design and the creation of new methods, novel modifications or combinations of existing methods. -To provide experience of handling and interpreting a wide range of analytical data. -To develop the techniques of communication, including report writing, poster and oral presentation. -To train students in independent study. As most of our students aim to improve their employment prospects the syllabus is closely matched to current industrial needs. We also provide additional assistance in finding employment.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Any one of the following: -Honours degree in chemistry or in a subject of which chemistry has formed a significant part. -Graduate membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry. -An ordinary degree in chemistry or its equivalent such as GRSC Part 1 or FIMLS plus a minimum of two years approved experience and any preliminary studies as we deem necessary. -Equivalent qualifications from international students.

    This course provides you with the opportunity to extend your knowledge of analytical chemistry.

    It provides the level of expertise required for entry to the Royal Society of Chemistry's Indicative

    Register of Analytical Chemists.

    Key Features

    Modular course with eight taught modules plus project.

    Emphasis on independent learning.

    Assessment predominantly by assignment. The course is designed to train students in the scientific method in relation to analytical chemistry, extend your interest and knowledge in all areas of the subject and provide vocational support.

    Course Structure

    You are required to pass eight taught modules including a practical module and project. The project requires 50 days' laboratory work and takes place during the summer, usually through an industrial placement.

    -Advanced Separation Techniques
    -Advanced Methods for Organic Compounds
    -Biochemical Methods
    -Environmental Analysis
    -Practical
    -Placements and Careers (no credits are awarded for these modules).
    -Career Opportunities

    Around 20 students graduate from this course each year. Some 90 per cent gain full-time employment within three months of graduation.

    Bursaries for this course may be available for eligible students.
