  • Objectives -Acquire and develop effective skills to innovate and advance practice using an evidence base. -Acquire and develop a systematic advanced knowledge and understanding of, and critical awareness of concepts within health and social care. -Enable practitioners to demonstrate an ability to work strategically within primary care to ensure the delivery of health services which are consonant with national and local policies. -Equip practitioners with the advanced skills to plan and evaluate primary care services which are responsive to the demonstrated needs of local populations annd based on best available evidence conversant with these needs. -Foster the advanced skills required for multi-professional and mutli-agency working required for a strategic approach to effective primary care.

  • Course description The pathway focuses on the broad range of skills required in the primary care setting including strategic planning and development, commissioning of services, epidemiology and evaluation of service delivery. In addition, the pathway affords the opportunity for practitioners to explore the theory and specialisms in order to develop skills and knowledge for the delivery of public health strategy and the delivery of public health practice to their populations. The pathway is well supported by local health and social care teams and includes sessions from specialists so as to maintain links with practice and an ability to reflect current trends in primary care.

    The pathway provides students with a unique opportunity to inform their work by drawing on specific relevant knowledge from a variety of related disciplines. The diversity of student’s professional experience further enhances the learning experience of participants and provides excellent networking opportunities. The pathway also affords students the opportunity to explore the legal and ethical dilemmas associated with multi-agency and inter-professional working, often across the complex primary/secondary care interface.     This programme will enhance your career development by developing your skills, knowledge and understanding of areas such as accident and Emergency, intensive care, coronary care or high dependency areas such as cardiac rehabilitation, acute cardio-respiratory care, ECG interpretation, advanced life support and drug therapies. It offer the chance to broaden your perspective to encompass wider issues underpinning critical care provision. The programme emphasises current national guidelines, legal constraints and consumer practice and will enable you to develop as an informed specialist, able to lead and innovate practice in critical care.

    Teaching methods

    You will acquire the knowledge and develop the skills and insights required to meet these challenges by learning from specialist teaching staff, interaction with fellow students and from the panel of external lecturers all of whom have professional experience of their specialist area. The programme comprises 2 compulsory and 7 optional specialist modules delivered at the University (also available as individual short courses). Programmes of study will be negotiated in advance. Credits in these modules may be accumulated for the award of a MSc or MSc Honours degree.
